“A girl should be two things: classy and fabulous”
Gabrielle ‘Coco’ Chanel, 1883 – 1971
When I was a teenager, Mum babysat for a lady called June, who lived at the Priest House next to Grafton Manor in Bromsgrove, Worcs. The house was huge, with extensive gardens and the family lived a completely different kind of lifestyle to the one I was living; opulent and luxurious. I accompanied Mum whilst she babysat the two boys and I would wander through the house, in admiration, dreaming that I would one day live in such elegance.
Occasionally, I would sneak into bedroom and sit at June’s dressing table pretending to be the ‘lady of the house’. It was here, among the myrid of perfumes, stood an assertive bottle of Chanel No. 5. I took off the top, sprayed it on either side of my neck and I was immediately transported to another world. Musky, floral and sweet – all at the same time. It was then that I first experienced the power of aroma and perfume. One spray could change how you feel in an instant. I felt elegant, sophisticated and rich. Everything I knew I wanted to be.
It wasn’t until I was much older and earning money that I was able to buy Chanel perfumes and make up. Coco Chanel is my heroine. She, too, took herself from rags to riches. She was her own boss and answered to no-one but herself and her customers. A maverick, strong and assertive – everything I strive to be. So, here is my homage to her – RE5OLVE Empowering Perfume – based on Chanel No. 5 and No. 19. The key ingredient is the musty, yet floral, galbanum which is wonderfully empowering and helps with blood circulation to increase energy. Complemented by ylang-ylang and jasmine, which are powerful aphrodisiacs and sweet orange which helps ease anxiety, it is great when you need a bit of a lift.
I use this all the time now when I go into meetings, especially when I expect there to be a little conflict. It helps me to radiate my solar plexus and create my own yellow blanket, in order to project my needs and wants, whilst understanding those of others. It also helps that I slip a golden yellow labradonite stone and a small figure of an elephant, that Joy gave, down my bra!
