THE HEALING POWER OF ESSENTIAL OILS
Aromatherapy has been used as far back as 4,500 BC, so it is nothing new. Myrrh, cinnamon, rose and neroli, to name but a few, have been used for years as medicine and perfume. Essential oils are extracted from plants using steam distillation, expression or maceration. The oils are very complex in their molecular structure containing an average of 100 components including: ketones, phenols, esters and aldehydes. These components have beneficial effects on the human body such as: sedating, stimulating, pain-relieving or hormone balancing.

ABSORPTION INTO THE BODY
These healing molecules enter the body in two ways; the OLFACTORY SYSTEM and THE SKIN. Olfaction (smell) is one of the most important senses. When the tiny essential oil molecules are inhaled, they are taken directly to the roof of the nose, where the receptor cells protrude tiny hairs, called cilia. The information from the aromas are sent to structures nestled deep in the brain via the olfactory bulb. Electrochemical messages are sent to the parts of the brain associated with smell and these trigger the release of neurochemicals, which have a sedative, relaxing, stimulating or euphoric affect depending on the oil smell. Aromatic molecules also travel down the navel passages into the lungs and into the blood stream. Candles or room diffusers containing essential oils are beneficial to changing your mood.

BENEFITS OF MASSAGE
When essential oils are mixed with carrier oils, such as grapeseed and avocado, then applied to the skin, they are absorbed into the blood stream by passing through sweat glands and hair follicles. From here, they are transported around the body via lymph and interstitial fluid to other parts of the body. Aromatherapy massages are beneficial, as the warmth of the skin and friction speed up the absorption.

Massage also increases the circulation of the lymphatic system and tired, aching muscles to release toxins and waste deposits. I recommend you go to a professional massage therapist. However, you may wish to do a self massage on your neck, shoulders and feet or ask your partner to do one for you.

More importantly, essential oils are wonderful for the emotions. They serve to soothe frazzled nerves, comfort us when in grief, and dampen anger. BASIL has a clean, uplifting aroma, which aids digestion, eases symptoms of stress and relieves colds. It is also a great insect repellent.

BAY LAUREL helps promotes confidence and courage. It helps build up the immune system and good for muscular pain. It is also purifyies the air.

BERGAMOT, the fragrance of Earl Grey tea, uplifts mood whilst relaxing. It helps ease anxiety, depression and nervous tension.

BLACK PEPPER stimulates blood circulation and strengthens the mind. It is good for muscular aches and arthritic pain.

CAMOMILE is an excellent skin cleanser and is good for dry, itchy skin. It is both soothing and a sedative, good for relieving insomnia

CARROT SEED is good for healing eczema and nourishes mature skin. It clears the complexion, toning and purifying skin.

CEDARWOOD is antiseptic, treating bronchitis and catarrh. It relieves aching muscles and is calming on the nervous system.

CLARY SAGE instantly eases mental tension, is calming and helps with symptoms of depression. It soothes headaches and migraine.

FRANKINCENSE heals scars and helps smooth wrinkles. It eases stress and balances hormones. It also helps with arthritic pain.

GERANIUM revitalises the body and regulates hormones. It eases mood swings and quells anxiety associated with menopause and PMS.

GRAPEFRUIT has an overall balancing quality and useful as an antidepressant; making it ideal in stressful times to ease anxiety.

HELICHRYSUM has cell-generating which is ideal for mature skin and healing scars. It detoxifies and has mild UV protection.

JASMINE is calming and emotionally uplifting, helping relieve symptoms of PMS, menopause and post natal depression. Moisturises skin.

JUNIPERBERRY is a very strong diuretic, helping detoxify and cleanse the body. It helps relieve fluid retention and cellulite. Strengthens nerves.

LAVENDER is soothing and relaxing, helping to relieve headaches. It works as a sedative, which means that it is useful to alleviate insomnia.

LEMON is a stimulant of the nervous system, bringing cheer and easing anxiety. It assists in the purification of the lymph system.

LIME boosts the lymphatic system. It helps relieve anxiety and stress. It is a great oil to use when convalescing after illness.

MANDARIN is calming, yet uplifting. It is good for nervous tension. It helps with stretch marks and to help reduce fluid retention.

MARJORAM is a mild sedative used for managing insomnia. It eases pain, making it ideal for relieving migraine. It is also an aphrodisiac.

NEROLI is ideal for skincare as it helps rejuvenate skin cells. It also improves the elasticity of the skin and smooths wrinkles.

PALMAROSA clears the mind and is soothing on nerves. It reduces feelings of anger and relieves anxiety. It is also antiviral.

PEPPERMINT is refreshing and stimulates the mind, aiding concentration. It helps reduce muscular & arthritic pain.

PETITGRAIN clears the mind & eases mental fatigue. It is sedative on the nervous system. It helps clear skin blemishes.

ROSE is a tonic for the nervous system. relieving depression & grief. It is an antioxidant and helps to regenerate skin cells.

ROSE GERANIUM soothes dry skin and heals physical scars. It reduces anxiety & regulates hormonal imbalances. Helps with period pain.

ROSEMARY stimulates blood circulation and eases muscular aches and pains. It is a stimulant helping with mental fatigue.
